When Walmart added RFID tags to apparel products and automotive tires they saw meaningful improvements in customer satisfaction and inventory accuracy. As a result, they’re now expanding RFID requirements to additional product categories.

Who is affected?

This change applies to suppliers of products in several categories, including home products, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and auto batteries. It also includes all national, proprietary, supplier, and private brands.

Where does the expanded RFID mandate apply?

This change applies to all Walmart USA Stores, including Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and online merchandise.

What is changing?

Thousands of Walmart suppliers in the affected product categories must add RFID labels to their products. Initially, a secondary RFID label can be added to the product. Eventually, RFID tags will be incorporated in product packaging.

When does Walmart’s expanded RFID mandate take effect?

JUNE 3

The last day to submit RFID samples for approval. Suppliers must send at least five sample RFID labels to Auburn University RFID lab for approval.

AUGUST 17

Must arrive by date (MABD). RFID-tagged products must arrive at distribution center.

SEPTEMBER 2

RFID tags required. All products arriving at stores must have RFID tags.
